A disobedient prophet. A raging storm. An ungodly people. A huge plant. And of course, a big fish. Jonah is a fun and interesting tale. But at its heart, this Old Testament account isn’t about the fish, or the people, or even the prophet. Our God is revealed as the one who pours out mercy on the undeserving, who is patient with the proud and turns our assumptions upside down.
God’s mercy points beyond Jonah, to the one who atones for the many, the one who died and three days rose again, to the savior not just of Israel but of all the world. May your heart be lifted by this incredible tale of mercy, the mercy we receive in Jesus Christ.
